April 22nd, 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Celebrate this influential event - and help to raise awareness about environmental concerns - by hosting one of the following top ten ideas.
Organize a Recycling Drive
With participation from the rest of the neighborhood, make a plan this Earth Day to collect all types of paper, plastic and glass for recycling. For extra fun, organize neighbors into teams and have a contest!
Join a Resource Pledge
Make a pact with others, locally or on a national scale, to help conserve resources. Take a short shower instead of a bath; turn all lights off during daylight hours; purchase recycled paper only from now on; etc.
Attend a Rally
Sheer force of numbers helps to raise awareness about environmental issues. Be a face in the crowd at a local rally to help tip the scale in favor of eco-friendliness.
Inform the Students
It will be the responsibility of the younger generation to continue working towards a better environment, so they shouldn't be left in the dark. Speak to local teachers to see if they have any Earth Day activities planned, and suggest some topics if they do not.
Do a Study
Knowing the facts is important for any cause, so spend some time at the library or online getting hard data about current environmental worries.
Change the Lights
Make sure all the lights in the house are eco-friendly to help conserve energy. Compact fluorescent light bulbs, halogen light bulbs and LEDs are all good choices.
Replace Disposables
Many of the items regular people use every day can be improved to be reusable and reduce waste. Make homemade dryer sheets and baby wipes, purchase reusable shopping bags, and get a refillable water bottle, for starters.
Start a Community Garden
With just a little bit of space, raw material, and effort, a community garden serves many purposes. It can get people actively involved in an eco-related activity; produce fresh fruits and vegetables or beautiful flowers; and help to bring a community closer together.
Ride a Bike
Use the nice spring weather as an opportunity to bike short distances, rather than taking the car. Even inexperienced cyclists should find it easy to cover a couple of miles at a time, and it's great exercise, too!
Use Social Networking
Perhaps the best way to spread awareness is to take advantage of all the social networking sites which are so prevalent today. Through mediums as simple as a FaceBook status, hundreds of people can take note of what others are doing for Earth Day and be inspired to participate as well.
Earth Day is a great time to spread awareness about environmental concerns while personally making an impact. Don't let the opportunity escape in 2010!
