It happens to everyone... we forget the birthday of a special friend or relative, and need to pull together a party with short notice. It can be done!

Everyone can relate to forgetting someone’s birthday. It can be a shameful feeling, particularly when the person whose birthday you have forgotten is someone you are supposedly close to. A last minute party can be as amusing as if you had planned it weeks in advance.

So You Forgot!

Imagine your best friend’s birthday is today and you know she doesn't plan on doing anything to celebrate, because she told you so. You on the other hand, wanted to throw a small party for your friend at your home. The only problem is that you forgot today is the day.

Invite only the closest friends of your friend, which might be your friends as well. Contrary to your Facebook profile, you may not have 300 friends; but only four. They’ve probably seen your home, therefore there’s no need to impress them with a thoroughly mopped floor and a meticulously designed candle arrangement.

Take a trip to the local bakery and purchase a large assortment of muffins, brownies, bagels and cake. For drink, a few cartons of cranberry juice and hot chocolate should make your guests feel comfortable.

The Last Minute, No Frills Activity

Since you don’t have a lot of time to plan a large activity, make the centerpiece of the party just you and your friends looking at hundreds of photos of you all together throughout the years. You can do this by connecting your laptop to an HDMI TV. Most new televisions come with this option, and using it would allow guests to view the photos in large format. They can now reminisce about joyful moments in the past by clicking through the photos. Think of how memorable the birthday would be for your friend.

Another good thing to do is plan a trip with your friends. Since you are all together eating cake and drinking hot chocolate, why not use the time to plan that trip to Paris you have been promising for years or that cruise you have all been anxious to go on. This is a good way to get your small group of guests excited about the night and about the future trip. With the computer connected to the television, the birthday party can become an impromptu conference room where you and your friends can playfully strategize your vacation.

Also, don’t forget simple things such as watching a movie, watching television or listening to music can also be activities that can be done, though they won’t be as memorable to your birthday friend.

Planning a birthday party at the last minute is possible, especially when the relationship between you, the birthday individual and the friends you will invite is close. Also, the fact that your friend didn’t plan to do anything anyways gives your party the value of spontaneity which she will appreciate.
